What an Occupational Therapist actually does

Occupation, in our sense of the word, means everything a person needs or wants to do with their day. Getting out of bed. Making lunch. Getting to work or to school. Seeing friends. Occupational Therapy is the work of closing the gap between what someone wants to do and what they can currently do on their own.

We do that in three broad ways: changing how a task is done, changing the environment it happens in, or building the underlying skill. Most plans use all three. A person who cannot shower safely might need a different transfer technique, a rail in the right place, and some strength work, and the assessment is what tells us the mix.

What we do not do is hand over a generic program. Two people with the same diagnosis can need completely different things, because they live in different houses, have different routines and want different outcomes. The assessment always comes first.

Support that comes to you

We see you where daily life actually happens, at home, at work, at school or out in the community across Brisbane. That's where the real goals live, and where change tends to stick.

Where it helps, your OT works alongside one of our Allied Health Assistants so you get more frequent, hands-on support between sessions.

How we work

01

We assess

We meet you where daily life happens and work out what's helping and what's getting in the way.

02

We plan around your goals

We set practical, meaningful goals with you and recommend strategies, equipment or home modifications.

03

We put it into action

We support you to carry out the plan, review progress, and adjust as things change.

Who it's for

NDIS participants of all ages, older adults on Home Care Packages, and people recovering from injury or illness. We come to you, where daily life actually happens, across Brisbane.

We work with NDIS, aged care and private health funds. We support self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most about Occupational Therapy at UHGroup.

Do I need a referral to see an Occupational Therapist?

No. You do not need a GP referral to see an OT privately or as an NDIS participant. Support coordinators, case managers, families, GPs and people themselves can all contact us directly.

Do you come to us, or do we come to you?

Both. We have a clinic in Darra and we travel across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, the Redlands and the Gold Coast. For most OT work, seeing someone in their own environment tells us far more than a clinic room does.

What funding do you work with?

Self-managed and plan-managed NDIS, Support at Home and aged care funding, private clients, Medicare rebates on eligible GP care plans, and private health claimed on the spot through HICAPS. We are not currently an NDIS-registered provider, so we cannot invoice the NDIA directly for agency-managed participants.

Which assessment do I actually need?

That is a fair question and the answer is not always obvious. A Functional Capacity Assessment covers the whole functional picture. A home safety assessment looks at the house and the risk in it. If you are not sure, tell us what you need the report to answer and we will point you to the right one.

Do you see children as well as adults?

Yes. We work with children, adults and older adults, and the approach changes a great deal between them.

How do you work with Allied Health Assistants?

Where it helps, your OT sets a program and one of our Allied Health Assistants delivers more frequent hands-on practice between sessions, at a lower hourly rate. It stretches a therapy budget further without cutting the clinical oversight.

A free tool: the Kawa Model Sandbox

We built an interactive version of the Kawa Model - the river picture Occupational Therapists use to map what helps and what gets in the way. It is free, it works on a phone or a tablet, and nothing you put into it is saved anywhere. Use it with us in an appointment, or have a go at home first.
